According to Jubert Daniel Alberto of International Date Corporation (IDC) Philippines, Artificial Intelligence (AI) will affect the BPO industry that is currently the reason why 1.2 million Filipinos are employed.
Senator Bam Aquino, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Science and Technology, said that the mentioned committee will conduct research as to how the AI will affect local jobs, specifically the BPO industry.
The senator is alarmed at the growing usage of Chatbots. “These systems use artificial intelligence and are capable of performing the tasks of human employees, putting their livelihood at risk, especially in the call center industry,” Sen. Aquino stated.
The International Labour Organisation (ILO) reported that 49 percent of all employment in the country is at risk because AI can replace them in the next couple of decades.
According to an investigation made by IDC around $47 billion is going to be spent globally by 2020 on AI-related applications on the field of banking, healthcare, and retail sectors.
Senator Bam Aquino said that “Every job created for Filipinos is important. We have to guard against trends that will take jobs away from our countrymen.”
Senate Resolution No. 344 was filed by Senator Aquino which will allow them to conduct an inquiry about the plans of the government and strategy in order to maximize the perks of the growth and development in the use of artificial intelligence and other technologies that are in development.
