In the past few years, the Philippines has made a name for itself in the industry of outsourcing services. Now, the country is gearing up to become a leader in one particular niche – healthcare outsourcing services.
Channel News Asia reports that the Philippines is now becoming a sought-after destination for medical and healthcare outsourcing solutions, and this is because of the considerable number of qualified nurses here.
One proof that the country is indeed on track to dominate this specific sector of the industry is the increase in revenue and employment. In 2012, the revenue for healthcare-related services hit $430 million, which is 55 percent more than the year before.
As reported by the Philippine Daily Inquirer, the healthcare outsourcing sector also experienced a significant increase in employment—the end of 2012 found the healthcare information management (HIM) with a workforce of 45,000.
Further growth is expected for the healthcare outsourcing services industry. The industry expects its earnings to reach the $1 billion mark at the end of 2016.
Josefina Lauchangco, the president of the Healthcare Information Management Outsourcing Association of the Philippines (HIMOAP), suggested that the country is poised to become a leader in the said sector of the industry because of ‘strong cultural affinity with the United States’ as well ‘medical know-how.’
The availability of qualified healthcare professionals is also an advantage. She noted that the Philippines produces about 100,000 graduates of medical-related courses, most of which finished Nursing. The industry is expected to create more jobs, therefore creating more employment opportunities for surplus graduates.
The Philippines started with healthcare outsourcing through services such as medical transcription, but now offers the following: disease management, clinical data management, insurance processing, and medical claims recovery.
