what to outsource

Back in the day, outsourcing was a strategy once reserved for big businesses. However, over time,
with improvements in technology and increased demand for farming out jobs to more qualified
professionals, the process has become accessible for small businesses as well. Due to this, more and
more organizations are looking at using the strategy to increase company efficiency while saving on
cost. But, when really is the best time to outsource and what business processes are worth outsourcing?

When to Outsource

The right time to outsource is different for every company. However, if the decision-makers find that
the in-house staff are unable to handle day-to-day business or are beginning to lose the ability to help
build the business satisfactorily, these can be clear indications that it is time to outsource. The same
thing can be said if there are projects within the business that demand a specific set of skills that cannot
be rendered by in-house employees.

Timing is different for start-ups and small businesses, though, as many experts recommend that they
outsource from the very beginning. However, the process should be done in phases to enable business
managers and decision-makers to assess if the strategy is working for the organization or not.

What to Outsource

There are a lot of tasks you can outsource and that’s why it gets a bit more confusing, making you question
what to outsource. These days, almost any task can be outsourced since a lot of qualified professionals
are leaving the corporate world to work as freelancers or outsourcers. However, it should be taken into
consideration that although almost anything can be outsourced that does not mean the business should decide
to outsource something just because they want to.

The key to knowing which tasks to assign to external agencies is to take a hard look at what the
business’s strengths and values are. Decision-makers should assess their core competencies and
capabilities and focus their resources and the attention of their in-house staff there. For instance, if a
small business specializes in product design, then it will not be a wise decision to outsource anything
that relates to this particular area. Instead, they should farm out day-to-day back-office tasks which
may be stalling the growth of the company since the employees will have to divide their attention to
attend to different tasks.

However, a thorough assessment should still be done when planning for which tasks to assign to external
agencies. There are some difficult business processes that may be at the heart of the company’s goals
but are better relegated to providers as they have the expertise to get the job done, such as IT support,
accounting, etc.

Generally, determining when and what to outsource is a matter of assessing the company’s needs
and understanding what the strategy will bring to the table. With due diligence and careful planning,
outsourcing can be one of the best investments a company can have that will allow them to focus on
their time, effort, attention and resources to their core competencies.
