Graphic Design rules the world. You can find it everywhere, and no one can deny that the visual presentation of things matters a lot. The Design Council examined 63 portfolios of businesses that traded on the FTSE (Financial Times Stock Exchange) over ten years in 2005. They found that businesses that prioritized design beat those that didn’t by a significant margin. Their study shows that the companies who invested in it surpassed the FTSE 100 index by 200%. This can presume that business owners and company managers who had used graphic design software had gotten more clients.

Since you are in business, you know that having a good design for your shop can make all the difference. Good graphic design can help you stand out from the competition, attract new customers, and boost your overall business. This article will outline the six outstanding perks of good graphic design for your business.

History of Graphic Design

Graphic design has been a significant part of our lives for years. We have used it to communicate important messages and create powerful visual images. Its history dates back to the earliest days of printmaking and is closely linked to the development of the printing press. Before the invention of photography, graphic design was the only way to communicate visually with the public.

The first sign of visual communication started about 38,000 BCE in cave paintings; this soon evolved into the creation of language, whereas Sumerians invented writing that is called pictographs in c.3300 to 3000 BC

Until the invention of printing. China began using woodblock, or relief printing, to emboss designs on silk garments in the sixth century CE and later on paper. Bi Sheng created the first method for printing with movable type in the year 1040. It was followed in 1439 when Johannes Gutenberg introduced moveable type to Europe, enabling Western civilization to mass communication. Metal and individual letters replaced the printing blocks and wood in Gutenberg’s design.

Then came the Industrial Revolution from around 1760 to 1840; new technologies were introduced to boost the productivity and efficiency of manufacturing operations like lithography.

Graphic Design

On one hand, the modern era of graphic design can be traced back to the mid-19th century when William Morris and the Arts and Crafts movement emerged in England. This movement rejected industrialization and embraced traditional craftsmanship, intending to create beautiful, meaningful, and handmade objects. This led to a period of experimentation with typefaces, color, and layout and the development of the first commercial typefaces.

In 1903, the first graphic agency was established, called the Wiener Werkstätte, built by the painter Koloman Moser, architect Josef Hoffmann and Patron Fritz Waerndorfer. The Werkstätte gathered architects, artists, and designers from ceramics, fashion, silver, furniture, and graphic arts. They are regarded as a modern design pioneer and early influences on styles such as Bauhaus and Art Deco. They influenced design standards for future generations as one of the first groups of professional artists to collaborate.

With its continuous evolution, in the 1920s and 1930s, a period known as the “Golden Age of Graphic Design,” a new form of graphic design emerged. This period saw the rise of poster art and advertising. The emergence of the modern graphic designer also took place. During this time, many of the techniques that are still in use today were developed, such as grid-based layouts, typography, and the use of color and photography.

In the 1950s and 1960s, the development of computer technology  made way for the graphic design industry, thus leading to the emergence of digital tools and the development of new techniques. This transformed the way graphic designers worked and communicated visually with their clients.

Today, it is crucial to every facet of visual communication, from video games and web design to product design and advertising. The field of graphic design is always changing, and its significance in our daily lives will only increase.
